เดอะบีทเทิลส์ (The Beatles) หรือวงสี่เต่าทอง เป็นวงร็อกแอนด์โรลจากเมืองลิเวอร์พูลในยุค 1960 เป็นหนึ่งในกลุ่มนักดนตรีที่ประสบความสำเร็จมากที่สุด
และมีบทบาทอันโดดเด่นอย่างมากในประวัติศาสตร์ดนตรีป๊อป สมาชิกของวงนับจากปี ค.ศ. 1962 ประกอบด้วย จอห์น เลนนอน (ริทึมกีตาร์, ร้องนำ),
พอล แม็กคาร์ตนีย์ (เบสกีตาร์, ร้องนำ),จอร์จ แฮรริสัน (ลีดกีตาร์, ร้องนำ) และ ริงโก สตารร์ (กลอง, ร้องนำ) แม้ในตอนเริ่มต้นแนวดนตรีจะเป็นแบบ
สกิฟเฟิลและร็อกแอนด์โรล แต่ในเวลาต่อมาแนวเพลงก็หลากหลาย นับแต่โฟล์คร็อกไปจนถึงไซเคเดลิคป๊อป บางครั้งก็ผสมแนวดนตรีคลาสสิกหรือ
เครื่องดนตรีแบบอื่นๆ ที่แปลกแหวกแนว
 
เดอะบีทเทิลส์ได้รับความนิยมอย่างสูงสุดในช่วงปี 1963-1969 เป็นวงที่ถือสถิติเพลงอันดับ 1 มากที่สุดทั้งในอังกฤษและอเมริกา 
ส่วนอัลบั้ม วงเดอะบีทเทิลส์ ถือเป็นวงดนตรีที่ขายดีที่สุดในโลก คือขายไปมากกว่า 480,000,000 ก๊อบปี้ แล้ว ราว 166 ล้าน เป็นยอดขายเฉพาะในอเมริกา
 
ในยุคต้นของพวกเขา มีเพลงดังอย่าง She Loves You, Twist And Shout, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Please Please Me
ในยุคที่ 2 ในชุด Help, Rubber Soul หรือ Revolver และผลงานอยู่ในช่วงพีคสุดอย่าง Sgt.Pepper Lonely Heart Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour
และ White Album ก่อนที่จะจบลงด้วย 2 อัลบั้มสุดท้ายอย่าง Let It Be และ Abbey Road
 
บุคคลที่อยู่เบื้องหลังความสำเร็จอันยิ่งใหญ่ เป็นเหมือนจิ๊กซอว์ตัวสุดท้ายหรือสารเคมีที่ทำให้ผลงานอันยอดเยี่ยมที่กล่าวมานี้สมบูรณ์แบบเป็นอมตะ
ต้องยกให้กับโปรดิวเซอร์ของวงอย่าง จอร์จ มาร์ติน ผู้ที่อยู่เคียงข้างเหล่าสี่เต่าทองตั้งแต่เริ่มเรียนรู้วิธีการเขียนเพลงและการทำงานให้ห้องบันทึกเสียง
จนสมาชิกในวงกลายเป็นนักแต่งเพลงผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ของโลกกันหมด

จอห์น เลนนอน นักร้องและนักกีตาร์วัย 16 ได้ก่อตั้งกลุ่มดนตรีสกิฟเฟิล ชื่อ เดอะควอร์รีเมน (The Quarrymen) ร่วมกับเพื่อนนักเรียนในเมืองลิเวอร์พูล
เมื่อเดือนมีนาคม ค.ศ. 1957 พอล แม็คคาร์ตนีย์ ในวัย 15 ได้เข้าร่วมกลุ่มด้วยในตำแหน่งมือกีตาร์ หลังจากที่เขาได้พบกับเลนนอนเมื่อเดือนกรกฎาคม
แม็คคาร์ตนีย์ชวนจอร์จ แฮร์ริสัน วัย 14 มาดูการแสดงของกลุ่มในเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ปีถัดมา แล้วจอร์จก็เข้าร่วมกลุ่มในตำแหน่งกีตาร์นำ ปี ค.ศ. 1960
เพื่อนนักเรียนของเลนนอนลาออกจากกลุ่ม ส่วนตัวเขาก็เริ่มเข้าเรียนที่วิทยาลัยศิลปะลิเวอร์พูล นักกีตาร์ทั้งสามยังคงเล่นดนตรีร็อกแอนด์โรลกันเรื่อยๆ
ถ้าหามือกลองได้ เดือนมกราคม สจ๊วต ซุตคลิฟ มือเบส เพื่อนนักเรียนของเลนนอน เสนอให้เปลี่ยนชื่อวงเป็น The Beetles เพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่ บัดดี ฮอลลี
และวงเดอะคริกเกตส์ ต่อมาพวกเขาเปลี่ยนชื่อวงเป็น The Beatals วงดนตรีเปลี่ยนชื่อไปอีกหลายชื่อ เช่น Johnny and the Moondogs,
Long John and the Beetles และ The Silver Beatles ในที่สุดวงก็เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น The Beatles
