อะไร(แม่ง)ก็เป็นศิลปะ : นักถ่ายทอดความจริงแท้แห่ง “เนื้อหนัง”

ด้วยความที่เดือนธันวาคมที่ผ่านมาเป็นเดือนเกิดของศิลปินคนโปรดตลอดกาลอีกคนของผม เลยขอหยิบยกเอาเรื่องราวของเขามาเล่าสู่กันฟังก็แล้วกัน ศิลปินคนนั้นมีชื่อว่า

ลูเซียน ฟรอยด์ (Lucian Freud)

เกิดที่กรุงเบอร์ลินในวันที่ 8 ธันวาคม 1922 มีบิดาเป็นสถาปนิกยิวเชื้อสายออสเตรเลียน มารดาเป็นชาวเยอรมัน ถ้าใครรู้สึกคุ้นๆ กับนามสกุลของเขาล่ะก็ นั่นเป็นเพราะเขาเป็นหลานของนายแพทย์ จิตแพทย์ และนักจิตวิทยาชาวออสเตรีย เป็นผู้ที่สร้างทฤษฎีจิตวิเคราะห์อันลือลั่นอย่าง ซิกมุนด์ ฟรอยด์ (Sigmund Freud) นั่นเอง

ในปี 1933 เขาและครอบครัวได้อพยพไปยังลอนดอน ประเทศอังกฤษ เพื่อลี้ภัยสงครามและการฆ่าล้างเผ่าพันธุ์ชาวยิวในช่วงนาซีเรืองอำนาจ

ที่นั่นเขาได้เข้าเรียนในช่วงสั้นๆ ที่ Central School of Art ในลอนดอน และ Cedric Morris’ East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing ในเด็ดแฮม และสถาบัน Goldsmiths ในลอนดอนและเริ่มงานแรกในชีวิตด้วยการเป็นนักวาดภาพประกอบหนังสือบทกวี และมีนิทรรศการแสดงภาพประกอบเป็นครั้งแรกในปี 1944

ในช่วงฤดูร้อนปี 1946 เขาเดินทางท่องเที่ยวไปยังปารีส ฝรั่งเศส และต่อด้วยกรีซ และเปลี่ยนสถานที่ทำงานในที่ต่างๆ ในสหราชอาณาจักรเป็นเวลาหลายเดือน

แต่ท้ายที่สุด เขาก็ได้หวนกลับมาพำนักและทำงานอย่างถาวรที่กรุงลอนดอนจวบจนวันสุดท้ายของชีวิต

ซึ่ง ณ ที่นี้นี่เอง ที่เขาได้กลายเป็นจิตรกรคนสำคัญที่สุดแห่งศตวรรษที่ 20

ผู้ที่นักวิจารณ์ศิลปะและนักเขียนชื่อดังอย่าง โรเบิร์ต ฮิวจ์ส ถึงกับขนานนามเขาว่าเป็น

“จิตรกรภาพเหมือนผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดที่ยังมีชีวิตอยู่”

ฟรอยด์เป็นที่รู้จักจากผลงานจิตรกรรมภาพเหมือนและภาพเปลือยอันแปลกตา โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งภาพเปลือยของนายและนางแบบร่างกายใหญ่โตมหึมา ที่ไม่มีอะไรเหมือนกับภาพเปลือยแบบตามแบบแผนทั่วๆ ไปเลยแม้แต่นิดเดียวของเขานั้น ส่งผลให้ผลงานของเขาเปี่ยมไปด้วยเอกลักษณ์พิเศษเฉพาะตัวอย่างยากที่จะหาใครมาเสมอเหมือน ในหมู่จิตรกรที่เขียนภาพร่างกายมนุษย์ (Figurative Painter) ด้วยกัน

ภาพเหมือนที่ซื่อตรง จริงใจ ไร้การจัดวาง ที่แสดงออกถึงภาพของเนื้อหนังอย่างจะแจ้ง ตรงไปตรงมา ถึงแม้จะเป็นภาพเหมือนของตัวเขาเองก็ตาม และมันได้สร้างมิติใหม่ในการทำงานจิตรกรรมขึ้นมา ซึ่งเป็นงานศิลปะที่แนบสนิทชิดเชื้อกับปุถุชน คนจริงๆ ที่ไม่ใช่นายหรือนางแบบที่มีร่างกายงดงามตามค่านิยม หากแต่เป็นการแสดงออกถึงแก่นแท้ตัวตนจริงของมนุษย์ด้วยการใช้สื่อศิลปะ

ภาพเหมือนบุคคลที่ฟรอยด์วาดออกมาจึงเป็นเสมือนหนึ่งการแสดงออกถึงพรสวรรค์ในการจับสังเกตธรรมชาติที่แท้จริงของแบบที่จะวาด ซึ่งก็คือ “มนุษย์” ออกมาโดยไม่มีการเสแสร้งบังคับหรือฝืนดัด ด้วยเหตุที่ฟรอยด์ไม่เคยบังคับให้นายแบบโพสท่าอย่างที่เขาต้องการ

หากแต่ปล่อยให้นายแบบปล่อยตัวตามสบายและถ่ายทอดห้วงเวลาแห่งการเผชิญหน้าระหว่างศิลปินกับนายแบบนั้นลงบนผืนผ้าใบ

จะว่าไป การแสดงออกอันเปล่าเปลือยและโจ่งแจ่ง (บางคนอาจบอกว่าโจ๋งครึ่ม) ของนายและนางแบบในภาพเขียนของเขาหาใช่การแสดงออกเพื่อยั่วยุหรือเย้ายวนทางเพศแต่อย่างใด (หรือใครจะว่าใช่ ก็ช่วยไม่ได้) หากแต่เป็นการแสดงออกถึงกายภาพทางเพศอย่างชัดเจน ตรงไปตรงมา ซื่อบริสุทธิ์ ไร้จริตมารยา ไร้การเสแสร้ง หรือแม้แต่ความเหนียมอายใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น

การถ่ายทอดภาพของเนื้อหนังอันล้นหลามและล้นเกินกว่าคำว่าอุดมสมบูรณ์ออกมาอย่างจะแจ้ง ผนวกกับการใช้เนื้อสีและทีแปรงที่แสดงออกซึ่งผิวหนังอันขาวซีดหยำเหยอะและหยาบกระด้าง ด้วยเทคนิค Impasto ซึ่งก็คือ การใช้สีหนาๆ ป้ายลงไปบนผืนผ้าใบจนเห็นเป็นรอยทีแปรงหรือรอยเกรียงปาดสีทิ้งเอาไว้ อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์อันโดดเด่นในภาพเขียนของฟรอยด์

จนสามารถกล่าวได้ว่า เขาเป็นคนที่ถ่ายทอดภาพลักษณ์อันจริงแท้ของเนื้อหนังที่ไร้การปรุงแต่งได้อย่างชัดแจ้งมากที่สุดคนหนึ่งในวงการศิลปะ

เป้าประสงค์ในการถ่ายทอดภาพเหมือนและภาพเปลือยของเขาเปรียบเสมือนการสร้างความเป็นจริงบางอย่างที่ภาพถ่ายไม่สามารถถ่ายทอดออกมาได้

ฟรอยด์เชื่อว่า การถ่ายภาพลดทอนมนต์ขลังบางประการระหว่างผู้สร้างงานกับผู้แสดงแบบ ความแตกต่างอันชัดเจนระหว่างภาพถ่ายกับภาพเขียนก็คือ ความเข้มข้นอันไร้ขีดจำกัดในการส่งผ่านความรู้สึกและห้วงเวลาแห่งความผูกพันอันล้ำลึกระหว่างผู้เขียนภาพและผู้แสดงแบบ ที่กล้องถ่ายภาพไม่อาจสื่อสารออกมาได้

“เมื่อผมวาดภาพคน ผมไม่ได้สนใจว่าพวกเขาจะหน้าตาเป็นอย่างไร หรือผมจะวาดได้เหมือนพวกเขาแค่ไหน หากแต่ผมวาดในสิ่งที่พวกเขาเป็นจริงๆ”

โดยส่วนใหญ่นายแบบและนางแบบของฟรอยด์มักจะเป็นบุคคลใกล้ชิดในชีวิต อาทิ คนรักครอบครัว เพื่อนสนิท และเหล่าเพื่อนศิลปินของเขา

“ภาพเขียน มันก็เหมือนกับอัตชีวประวัติของศิลปิน มันประกอบขึ้นจากความผูกพันทรงจำ ความรู้สึก ความรัก และความหวังของคุณและคนรอบๆ ตัวอย่างแท้จริง”

ดังในช่วงปี 1970 ที่เขาใช้เวลากว่า 4,000 ชั่วโมง วาดภาพเหมือนในซีรี่ส์ต่างๆ ของแม่ของเขาขึ้นมา



ด้วยความที่เขาเป็นจิตรกรภาพเหมือนที่ยิ่งใหญ่และโด่งดังสุดคนหนึ่งแห่งยุคสมัย จึงมีทั้งอภิมหาเศรษฐีมีทรัพย์ ดารานักร้องซูเปอร์สตาร์ และบุคคลมีชื่อเสียงต่างๆ ไม่เว้นแม้แต่เหล่าบุคคลสำคัญระดับประเทศเหล่าราชวงศ์และราชนิกุล ที่อยากมานั่งเป็นแบบให้หรือต้องการตัวเขาให้มาเขาวาดภาพให้จนตัวสั่น

ถ้าไม่นับกรณีที่โดนบังคับหักคอหรือปฏิเสธไม่ได้จริงๆ เขาเองก็มักจะปฏิเสธความต้องการและไม่แยแสสนใจอามิสสินจ้างของคนเหล่านั้นโดยสิ้นเชิง

ถึงขนาดที่ว่าเขาเคยปฏิเสธที่จะวาดภาพเหมือนให้เจ้าหญิงไดอาน่า และพระสันตะปาปา จอห์น ปอล ที่ 2 ด้วยซ้ำ!

ว่ากันว่า มีครั้งหนึ่งฟรอยด์ปฏิเสธคอมโพเซอร์ชื่อดังก้องโลกอย่าง แอนดรูว์ ลอยด์ เว็บเบอร์ (ผู้แต่งเพลงให้ละครเพลง The Phantom of the Opera และ Evita อันโด่งดัง) ที่มาขอให้เขาวาดภาพเหมือนให้

ด้วยเหตุผลที่ว่า อีตาแอนดรูว์แกดันขอจ่ายค่าจ้างวาดภาพเป็นตั๋วฟรีคอนเสิร์ตของตัวเอง (ช่างกล้า!!!)

ถึงแม้จะถือว่าเป็นศิลปินที่หาตัวจับ (มาวาดรูปให้) ยาก และค่อนข้างหมางเมินชื่อเสียง และไม่แยแสคนดัง แต่ก็ใช่ว่าเขาจะไม่เคยวาดรูปให้เซเลบคนไหนเลย

เพราะซูเปอร์โมเดลชื่อดังชาวอังกฤษอย่าง เคต มอส เองก็เคยแบบเป็นให้ฟรอยด์วาดภาพนู้ดในช่วงที่เธอตั้งครรภ์มาแล้ว

นอกจากเธอจะเป็นบุคคลที่มีชื่อเสียงโด่งดังที่สุดที่เขาเคยวาดภาพให้ (ยกเว้นสมเด็จพระราชินีของอังกฤษ) แล้ว เธอก็ยังเป็นหนึ่งใน “Muse” หรือนางแบบคนโปรดผู้เปรียบเสมือนเทพธิดาแห่งแรงบันดาลใจคนโปรดของฟรอยด์อีกด้วย



นอกจากจะเป็นคนที่ชืดชาต่อชื่อเสียง เขายังเป็นศิลปินที่ค่อนข้างขี้อายและเก็บตัว ไม่ค่อยให้สัมภาษณ์หรือปรากฏตัวออกสื่อนัก

แต่ก็ยังถือว่าโชคดี ที่เขาเคยอนุญาตให้นักทำสารคดีศิลปะอย่าง ทิม มีอาร่า (Tim Meara) ให้เข้ามาเก็บภาพและถ่ายทำสารคดีเกี่ยวกับตัวเขาในภาพยนตร์สั้นเรื่อง Small Gestures in Bare Rooms (2010) ที่ถ่ายทอดภาพในสตูดิโอ Holland Park ของเขา ซึ่งน้อยคนนักที่จะมีโอกาสได้เข้าไปข้างใน

มีอาร่าใช้เวลากว่า 6 เดือน สัมภาษณ์บุคคลผู้ใกล้ชิดวงในของฟรอยด์ และนำมันมาร้อยเรียงเป็นภาพเคลื่อนไหว โดยตั้งชื่อมันว่า “Silent Portraits”

ซึ่งในระหว่างการถ่ายทำก็เกิดสิ่งที่ไม่คาดคิดขึ้น เมื่อฟรอยด์ตกลงที่จะปรากฏตัวหน้ากล้อง โดยเขาอนุญาตให้มีอาร่าถ่ายทำภาพเขาเดินไปพร้อมกับเจ้าเหยี่ยว สัตว์เลี้ยงคู่ใจที่เกาะอยู่บนแขน ไปตามทางเดินในลิตเติลเวนิส ลอนดอน เป็นเวลาถึงครึ่งชั่วโมง

หนังบันทึกความมีชีวิตชีวา ร่าเริง อัจฉริยภาพในการทำงานของจิตรกรภาพเหมือนที่โดดเด่นที่สุดในยุคสมัยของเรา รวมถึงพลังแห่งการสร้างสรรค์ของเขาที่ยังคงแฝงตัวอยู่ในร่องรอยของหยดสีซึ่งหลงเหลืออยู่บนพื้นสตูดิโอเก่าแก่ แม้มันจะถูกทิ้งให้รกร้างว่างเปล่ามานานแค่ไหนแล้วก็ตาม

อีกไม่นานหลังจากที่สารคดีออกฉาย ลูเซียน ฟรอยด์ ก็เสียชีวิตลงอย่างสงบ ในวันที่ 20 กรกฎาคม 2011 ที่บ้านของเขาในลอนดอน ด้วยวัย 88 ปี

เป็นการปิดฉากชีวิตของจิตรกรแนวเหมือนจริงและศิลปินที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดในยุคสมัยของเราอีกผู้หนึ่งลงในที่สุด

Manhattan's Acquavella Galleries is showing a group of the artist's monumental works that have never been seen together.

Lucian Freud: Monumental

The show comprises 13 large-scale nude portraits painted in the last two decades of Freud’s life, among them Portrait on Gray Cover, 1996. The works have never previously been shown together.

The daughter of controversial British painter Lucian Freud has revealed what it was like to sit naked for him as a teenager.

Freud, who died in 2011, is regarded as one of Britain's greatest artists of the 20th century. His 1995 work – Benefits Supervisor Sleeping – sold for £44million at an auction in New York three years ago.

Now his daughter Rose Boyt, one of his 14 acknowledged children, has revealed the trials and tribulations she faced posing for her father at his London studio three or four times a week between 1977 and 1978, when she was 18.

She was on a foundation course at Central School of Art and Design in London when they started on the piece he would name 'Rose'.

When the painting was finally unveiled, it caused quite the stir - the teenage Rose lies on her back with her legs open and a hand partially covering her eyes.

Writing for the The Times, the mother-of-two and author said: 'Nothing had been discussed, I just assumed I would be naked. I got undressed and asked him what he would like me to do.

'He said it was up to me, so I lay on the sofa. But I didn't want to look obedient in my portrait; I didn't feel obedient.

'I wanted him to paint me, but not like the others — there was some kind of battle going on, unacknowledged, but expressed in the muscles of my bent leg. I was alert, prepared to spring up at any moment.'

Freud was the grandson of Sigmund Freud, a leading pioneer of modern psychoanalysis. He was born in Berlin in 1922 and moved to London with his parents Ernst and Lucie Freud in 1933 after Hitler and the Nazis rose to power in Germany.

He was naturalised as a British subject six years later and spent almost his entire working life based in London, where he was often seen at fashionable restaurants, sometimes with beautiful younger women, including the fashion model Kate Moss, who he painted nude, and other luminaries.

He was at the height of his fame in the last decades of his life, when he still continued to paint for long hours at his studio in London's exclusive Holland Park.

Following Freud's death Rose was the child – out of the many – whom he chose to be co-executor with a lawyer of his £96 million (pre-tax) estate.

She said of the painting: 'How did I feel about sitting? Angry and exhilarated, outraged by the terms and conditions, honoured to have been chosen.'

Nudity was a central feature of Freud's art. Painting people without their clothes, he believed, peeled away their outer layer and helped reveal their instincts and desires.

'I'm really interested in people as animals,' he told curators at the Tate Britain museum in advance of a major show in 2002. 'Part of my liking to work from them naked is for that reason, because I can see more ... I like people to look as natural and as physically at ease as animals.'

The painting of Rose and unseen photographs of the artist taken during the portrait's creation are the subject of the forthcoming exhibition at Ordovas in London. 

On public display for the first time, Rose's behind the scenes photographs bring Freud's studio to life and place the portrait of his daughter in the context of its creation.

In the Studio will run at Ordovas, London from February 23 to April 27. The painting Rose will be on display in the exhibition.
