พระบรมมหาราชวัง
พระบรมมหาราชวังเป็นพระราชนิเวศน์แห่งแรกในกรุงเทพมหานคร สร้างขึ้นในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช ในปี พ.ศ. ๒๓๒๕ มูลเหตุแห่งการสร้างเกิดขึ้นเนื่องจาก ทรงเห็นว่ากรุงธนบุรี มีชัยภูมิไม่เหมาะสมเพราะมีลำน้ำผ่านกลางเมือง เรียกว่าเมืองอกแตก เมืองลักษณะนี้ข้าศึกสามารถรุกรานได้ง่าย สาเหตุอีกประการหนึ่งเนื่องจาก พระราชวังกรุงธนบุรี มีวัดขนาบ ๒ ด้าน คือวัดแจ้ง (วัดอรุณราชวราราม) และวัดท้ายตลาด (วัดโมลีโลกยาราม) ทำให้ไม่สามารถขยายพระราชวังให้ยิ่งใหญ่เหมือนพระราชวังเมื่อครั้งกรุงศรีอยุธยาได้
พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ย้ายเมืองหลวงจากกรุงธนบุรี ซึ่งอยู่ฝากฝั่งตะวันตกของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยามายังฝั่งตะวันออก ซึ่งสถานที่แห่งนี้เดิมเป็นที่อยู่ของเหล่าบรรดาชาวจีนภายใต้การดูแลของพระยาราชาเศรษฐี จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ย้ายชาวจีนเหล่านี้ไปตั้งหลักแหล่งใหม่ ณ บริเวณที่สวนตั้งแต่คลองวัดสามปลื้ม (วัดจักรวรรดิ์ ฯ) ถึงคลองวัดสามเพ็ง (วัดสัมพันธวงศ์) ปัจจุบันคือเยาวราช โดยโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้พระยาธรรมาธิกรณ์และพระยาวิจิตรนาวี เป็นแม่กองในการก่อสร้างพระบรมมหาราชวัง และในวันที่ ๑๓ มิถุนายน พ.ศ. ๒๓๒๕ เวลา ๖ นาฬิกา ๒๔ นาที อันเป็นมงคลฤกษ์ที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช เสด็จพระราชดำเนินโดยขบวนพยุหยาตราทางชลมารคจากพระราชวังกรุงธนบุรี ข้ามแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยามายังพระบรมมหาราชวัง ทรงประกอบพระราชพิธีปราบดาภิเษก และเฉลิมพระราชมณเฑียร พระบรมมหาราชวังเมื่อแรกสร้างมีเนื้อที่ ๑๓๒ ไร่ แต่ต่อมาพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัย ทรงเห็นว่าเขตพระราชฐานชั้นใน ซึ่งเป็นที่ประทับสำหรับพระมเหสี พระราชเทวี เจ้าจอมและเจ้านายฝ่ายในมีความคับแคบ จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ขยายเนื้อที่ด้านทิศใต้ออกไปทางถนนท้ายวัง เพิ่มขึ้นอีก ๒๐ ไร่ ๒ งาน รวมมีเนื้อที่ทั้งสิ้น ๑๕๒ ไร่ ๒ งาน โดยแบ่งเขตออกเป็น ๓ ส่วน คือ

• เขตพระราชฐานชั้นกลาง
• เขตพระราชฐานชั้นใน
