กรุงศรีอยุธยา อาณาจักรที่ยิ่งใหญ่ของไทย [9] วัดบรมพุทธาราม
วัดบรมพุทธาราม
วัดบรมพุทธาราม หรือ วัดบรมพุทธวาศน์ หรือ วัดบรมพุทธาวาศน์ เป็นวัดโบราณในเขตเกาะเมืองอยุธยา มีฐานะเป็นพระอารามหลวง และยังเป็นวัดประจำราชวงศ์บ้านพลูหลวง ที่สร้างในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาตอนปลายเมื่อราว พ.ศ. 2226-2229 สร้างขึ้นบริเวณย่านป่าตอง ซึ่งเป็นนิวาสสถานเดิมของ สมเด็จพระเพทราชา ปฐมกษัตริย์ ราชวงศ์บ้านพลูหลวง เมื่อครั้งยังดำรงตำแหน่งเป็นเจ้ากรมพระคชบาล (เจ้ากรมช้าง)
ปรากฎใน พระราชพงศาวดารกรุงเก่า ความว่า
"แลปีกุนเบ็ญจศกแล้วนั้น สมเด็จพระพุทธเจ้าหลวงทรงพระดำริห์ว่าที่บ้านหลวงตำบลป่าตองนั้น เป็นที่มงคลสิริราชฐานอันประเสริฐสมควรจะสร้างเป็นพระอาราม มีพระอุโบสถ วิหาร การเปรียญ พระเจดีย์ ฐานกำแพงแก้ว และกุฏีสงฆ์ ศาลา ตะพาน เว็จกุฏีพร้อม และทรงพระกรุณาให้หมื่นจันทราช่างเคลือบ ทำกระเบื้องเคลือบสีเหลืองมุงพระอุโบสถ วิหารทั้งปวง และการสร้างพระอารามนั้น สามปีเศษจึงสำเร็จในปีขาน อัฐศก แล้วพระราชทานนามบัญญัติ พระอารามชื่อ วัดบรมพุทธาราม ตั้งเจ้าอธิการชื่อพระญาณสมโพธิราชา คณะคามวาสี ครองพระอาราม แล้วทรงพระกรุณาให้มีการฉลอง และมีมหรศพสามวัน และทรงถวายไทยทานแก่พระสงฆ์เป็นอันมากและพระราชทานเลขข้าพระไว้อุปัฏฐาก พระอารามก็มาก แล้วถวายพระกัลปนาขึ้นแก่พระอารามตามธรรมเนียม"
โดยบริเวณหลังคาพระอุโบสถเป็นหลังคากระเบื้องเคลือบทำให้ผู้คนในสมัยนั้นเรียกวัดแห่งนี้ว่า วัดกระเบื้องเคลือบ ส่วนภายในพระอุโบสถเคยมีภาพวาดจิตรกรรมฝาผนังที่วิจิตรงดงามแต่ได้เลือนหายไปตามกาลเวลาอีกทั้งถูกพม่าเผาในคราวเสียกรุง
ต่อมาในรัชสมัย สมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวบรมโกศ ได้ทำการปฏิสังขรณ์พระอารามครั้งใหญ่โดยโปรดให้ทำบานประตูประดับมุขฝีมือวิจิตร 3 คู่ซึ่งปัจจุบันคู่หนึ่งอยู่ที่ หอพระมณเฑียรธรรม ใน พระบรมมหาราชวัง อีกคู่หนึ่งอยู่ที่ วัดมหาธาตุยุวราชรังสฤษดิ์ และอีกคู่ได้ผู้มีนำไปทำตู้หนังสือปัจจุบันอยู่ใน พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ พระนคร
ข้อสันนิษฐานเรื่องกระเบื้องเคลือบที่ใช้มุงหลังคาพระอุโบสถ สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ ทรงสันนิษฐานว่า "เห็นจะเป็นของสั่งเข้ามาจากเมืองจีน จึงเป็นของแพงและมิได้มุงแพร่หลายออกไปถึงที่อื่น แม้แต่มุงวัดเดียวก็ยังเห็นเป็นของอัศจรรย์ จนราษฎรเอามาเรียกเป็นชื่อวัด" ส่วนในพระราชพงศาวดาร ฉบับพระราชหัตถเลขา กล่าวว่า "โปรดให้หมื่นจันทราช่างเคลือบทำกระเบื้องเคลือบสีเหลืองขึ้นมุงหลังคาโบสถ์วิหารวัดบรมพุทธาราม" หมื่นจันทราผู้นี้เป็นช่างเคลือบเข้ามาเมื่อในครั้งแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช อาจเป็นช่างผู้นี้อยู่มาจนแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระเพทราชา ด้วยระยะเวลาไม่ห่างกันนักจึงโปรดให้ทำกระเบื้องเคลือบขึ้นมุงวัดบรมพุทธาราม
ความในพระราชพงศาวดาร ฉบับพระราชหัตถเลขานั้นขัดแย้งกับข้อสันนิษฐานของสมเด็จกรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ แต่พระองค์ทรงไม่เชื่อความในพระราชพงศาวดาร ฉบับพระราชหัตถเลขาดังกล่าวด้วยเหตุ 2 ประการ คือ ประการแรก เนื้อดินเศษกระเบื้องสีอ่อนเป็นดินเมืองจีน มิใช่ดินเมืองไทย ประการที่สอง ถ้าทำกระเบื้องเคลือบได้คงมุงแพร่หลายออกไปหลายแห่งเหมือนอย่างในกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ เห็นว่าครั้งกรุงเก่าทำไม่ได้เองจึงมุงน้อยแห่งนัก เมื่อมุงวัดบรมพุทธารามจึงเห็นเป็นการแปลกประหลาด จนพากันเรื่องชื่อวัดนี้ว่า "วัดกระเบื้องเคลือบ"
ปัจจุบันตั้งอยู่ในเขต มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏพระนครศรีอยุธยา โดยได้รับการขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นโบราณสถานสำคัญของชาติเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2484
