วัดช้างล้อม (อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย)
วัดช้างล้อม เป็นโบราณสถานภายในกำแพงเมือง อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัย อำเภอศรีสัชนาลัย จังหวัดสุโขทัย วัดแห่งนี้ตั้งอยู่บริเวณที่ราบด้านเชิงเขาพนมเพลิงด้านทิศใต้ ในแนวแกนเดียวกับวัดเจดีย์เจ็ดแถว
วัดช้างล้อม มีจุดเด่นที่สำคัญคือเจดีย์ทรงลังกาบนฐานประทักษิณรูปสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัส 2 ชั้น ชั้นแรกประกอบด้วยงานปูนปั้นช้างยืนเต็มตัวล้อมรอบฐานทั้ง 4 ด้าน รวม 39 เชือก โดยช้างที่อยู่หัวมุมฐานทั้ง 4 มุมจะมีขนาดใหญ่กว่าตัวโดยรอบ ส่วนชั้นที่ 2 ประกอบด้วยซุ้มพระพุทธรูปประทับนั่งปางมารวิชัยโดยมีประติมากรรมรูปต้นโพธิ์อยู่เบื้องหลังจำนวน 17 องค์
ประวัติ
นักวิชาการสันนิษฐานว่า วัดช้างล้อมนี้น่าจะเป็นวัดเดียวกันกับที่ปรากฏในศิลาจารึกหลักที่ 1 ที่ถอดความว่า "1208 ศกปีกุล ให้ขุดเอาพระธาตุออกทั้งหลายเห็นกระทำบูชาบำเรอแก่พระธาตุได้หกวัน จึงเอาฝังในกลางเมืองศรีสัชนาลัย ก่อพระเจดีย์เหนือหกเช้าจึงแล้ว ตั้งเวียงผาล้อมพระมหาธาตุสามเช้าาจึงแล้ว" จากข้อความดังกล่าวจึงถูกยึดถือและยอมรับโดยทั่วกันว่าน่าจะถูกสร้างขึ้นราวปี พ.ศ. 1828 - 1831
สถาปัตยกรรม
โบราณสถานที่สำคัญ คือ เจดีย์ประธานทรงลังกาตั้งอยู่ภายในกำแพงแก้วสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัส โดยมีซุ้มประตูทั้ง 56 ทิศ ประตูด้านหน้าและประตูด้านหลังเป็นทางเข้าออกก่อเป็นกำแพงศิลาแลงหนามีการเล่นระดับที่ซุ้มประตูอย่างสวยงาม สำหรับประตูด้านข้างก่อเรียงอิฐศิลาแลงปิดไว้เป็นประตูตัน
เจดีย์ประธานทรงลังกาขนาดใหญ่ ตั้งอยู่บนฐานประทักษิณรูปสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัสซ้อนกันหลายชั้น มีทางเดินเป็นบันไดขึ้นไปยังชั้นบน โดยรอบเจดีย์มีช้างปูนปั้นเต็มตัวประดับโดยรอบฐานทั้ง 4 ด้าน ด้านละ 9 เชือก (ยกเว้นด้านหนึ่งซึ่งเป็นบันไดทางขึ้นมีเพียง 8 เชือก) และที่มุมมีช้างขนาดใหญ่ประดับอีก 4 เชือก รวมเป็น 39 เชือก ช้างเชือกใหญ่ที่อยู่มุมเจดีย์เป็นช้างทรงเครื่องมีลวดลายปูนปั้นประดับที่คอ และข้อเท้าสวยงามกว่าช้างที่ฐานสี่เหลี่ยม ระหว่างช้างปูนปั้นที่ฐานนั้นจะมีเสาประทีปศิลาแลงสลับเป็นระยะ ด้านหน้าช้างแต่ละเชือกจะมีพุ่มดอกบัวตูมปูนปั้นวางตั้งอยู่
ปัจจุบันช้างปูนปั้นได้ผุผังไปเป็นส่วนใหญ่ เหลือที่เห็นเป็นรูปหัวช้างอยู่จำนวนไม่กี่เชือก แต่ยังคงแสดงออกถึงความงดงามของประติมากรรมสมัยสุโขทัยอย่างเต็มที่ ช้างปูนปั้นที่วัดช้างล้อมในอุทยานประวัติศาสตร์ศรีสัชนาลัยมีลักษณะเด่นกว่าช้างปูนปั้นที่วัดอื่นๆ คือ ยืนเต็มตัวแยกออกจากผนัง มีขนาดสูงใหญ่เทียบเท่าหรือใหญ่กว่าช้างจริง
เบื้องเจดีย์ประธานมีบันได2 ชั้นขึ้นสู่ลานหน้าเจดีย์ เหนือฐานประทักษิณมีซุ้มพระพุทธรูปประทับนั่งปางมารวิชัย 20 ซุ้ม โดยส่วนใหญ่ได้ผุผังไปเกือบหมด ยังเหลือที่สมบูรณ์เพียงไม่กี่องค์ เหนือบริเวณองค์ระฆังขึ้นไปเป็นบัลลังก์ก้านฉัตรประดับด้วยพระรูปพระสาวกปางลีลาปูนปั้นแบบนูนต่ำจำนวน 17 องค์
นอกจากนั้นวัดช้างล้อมยังมีวิหารที่อยู่ด้านหน้าเจดีย์ประธาน นอกนั้นเป็นวิหารขนาดเล็ก 2 หลัง และเจดีย์รายอีก 2 องค์
