ตำนานเฮอร์คิวลิส และ 12 ภารกิจที่ต้องพิชิต
ภารกิจ 12 ประการ ของเฮอร์คิวลิสที่ต้องพิชิต
เฮอร์คิวลิส เป็นเทพที่มีพละกำลังมหาศาล แข็งแกร่ง สามารถสู้กับสัตว์ร้ายได้นานาประเภท ทั้งนี้เพราะเฮอร์คิวลิสเป็นลูกครึ่งเทพและมนุษย์นั่นเอง บิดาคือ เทพซุสผู้เจ้าชู้ ส่วนมารดาของเฮอร์คิวลิสเป็นหญิงสาวงามนามว่า อัลค์เมนี
ซุสปลอมตัวเป็นสามีของนางและมีสัมพันธ์กัน ต่อมา อัลค์เมนี ได้คลอดลูกแฝด คนหนึ่งเป็นมนุษย์ธรรมดา(อิฟิคลิส คู่แฝดที่เป็นมนุษย์ธรรมดา) แต่อีกคนนั้นได้รับพรวิเศษเหมือนบิดา อัลค์เมนี ตั้งชื่อว่าเฮอร์คิวลิส อันหมายความว่า เกียรติยศแห่งเฮร่า แต่แทนที่เทพีเฮร่าจะพอใจ กลับจงเกลียดจงชังเฮอร์คิวลิสอย่างมากเพราะรู้อยู่แก่ใจว่าเป็นลูกอีกคนของสวามี
ความอิจฉาริษยาทำให้เฮร่าส่ง งูพิษมากำจัดเด็กน้อย แต่เฮอร์คิวลิสผู้ทรงพลังกลับฆ่างูตายราวกับเป็นของเล่นเด็ก และนั่นคือจุดเริ่มต้นที่ทำให้ทุกคนรู้ว่าเด็กคนนี้ไม่ใช่เด็กธรรมดา แต่มีพลังวิเศษเหนือมนุษย์ เฮอร์คิวลิสเติบโตมากลายเป็นเด็กหนุ่มที่แข็งแกร่งและได้เรียนวิชาการต่อสู้ต่างๆ จนแตกฉาน ต่อมาเฮอร์คิวลิสได้เข้าร่วมกองทัพและเอาชนะข้าศึกได้ กษัตริย์จึงพระราชทานลูกสาวนามว่า เมการ่า ให้เป็นคู่ครอง ทั้งคู่อยู่ด้วยกันอย่างผาสุกจนมีบุตรด้วยกันสามคน
เทพีเฮร่าก็ตัดสินใจหาทางกลั่นแกล้งสาปแช่งให้เฮอร์คิวลิสคุ้มคลั่งจนขาดสติ เผลอตัวสังหารภรรยาและลูกๆ จนหมด หลังจากได้สติด้วยฝีมือของเทพีอาเธน่าผู้ใจดี เฮอร์คิวลิสตกอยู่ในความทุกข์กับสิ่งที่ทำลงไปและเกือบจะฆ่าตัวตาย เขาทนอยู่ในเมืองไม่ได้ ทั้งที่ทุกคนก็ไม่ได้กล่าวโทษการกระทำของเขา ก็เลยเนรเทศตัวเอง รอนแรมไปตามป่าจนได้พบกับเทพพยากรณ์ ที่แนะนำให้เขาไปหากษัตริย์ผู้หยาบช้า ยูริสธีอุส (Eurystheus) เพื่อชดใช้บาปที่ตัวเองได้กระทำลงไป
และที่นี่เอง เฮอร์คิวลิสถูกมอบหมายให้ทำภารกิจ 10 อย่าง แต่สุดท้ายกลับเพิ่มเป็น 12 อย่าง ซึ่งจะว่าไป ก็เหมือนส่งไปตายมากกว่าให้ไปทำให้สำเร็จ และภารกิจทั้ง 12 ก็กลายเป็นที่มาของวลียอดฮิตอย่าง The Twelve Labours of Hercules (ภารกิจ 12 ประการ ของเฮอร์คิวลิส)
ภารกิจทั้ง 12 ที่เฮอร์คิวลิสได้รับมอบหมายนั้นล้วนแต่อันตรายจนเหมือนไปฆ่าตัวตายมากกว่า แต่ด้วยความที่ไม่มีอะไรจะเสีย ประกอบกับเสียอกเสียใจที่ได้ฆ่าบุตรและภรรยา เฮอร์คิวลิสผู้ไม่กลัวตายจึงออกเดินทางในทันที และภารกิจทั้ง 12 อย่างที่เขาต้องทำให้สำเร็จก็คือ...
